What happens at a cardiology consultation?
At your cardiology consultation, Dr. Bokhari goes over your personal and family health history and current medical needs, answers any questions you may have, and recommends any tests that may be helpful in determining your risk factors for heart-related disease.
What cardiovascular screenings should I get?
Getting routine screenings can help Dr. Bokhari diagnose cardiovascular conditions or risk factors before they become severe, reveal any need for treatment, and help you stay on an overall heart-healthy path.
Basic screenings include:
- Blood pressure
Blood pressure screens can help detect high blood pressure, which is usually asymptomatic but greatly increases your risk for heart disease and stroke. If your blood pressure falls below 120/80 mmHg, a test at least once every 2 years from age 20 on is important. Higher blood pressure may require more frequent testing, as well as lifestyle changes and medication.
- Blood sugar
From age 45 on, have your blood sugar (glucose) checked every 3 years or more. High blood sugar raises your risk for insulin resistance, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes. If left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious complications including heart disease.
- Cholesterol and triglycerides
Starting at age 20, aim to have your fasting lipoprotein profile — which assesses your cholesterol and triglyceride levels — every 4-6 years. More frequent testing may be recommended if you have risk factors for heart disease or stroke.
- Lifestyle
While it’s not a test per say, discussing your lifestyle at cardiovascular and annual exams is important. Quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and staying physically active all help protect against cardiovascular disease. If you aren’t sure what changes to make or struggle to maintain them, discuss your habits and concerns with Dr. Bokhari.
